It's another discussion of manips.  Sorry.  I can't help myself.  One of the things I see most often is a manip where the head is too big for the body (or sometimes it's too little).

There is an EASY way to make sure you're not doing this:  make sure your manipped head is only as big as the base-body's hand from end of palm to fingertip.

here's a manip I did a while ago:

coloring / sharpening imbalance aside, this head works with this body.

[ here's the source pic so you can compare them ]

Now, what I'd first suggest you do is try and match facial features:
- are the eyebrows / eyes in the same position?
- is the mouth in the same position?
- is the nose in the same position?
(you can do this by positioning your head over the old face, and setting the layer to screen (so you can see through it))

But here's the thing - every single person has a different ratio of features.  And some of the actors/actresses you'll be working with have VERY striking faces.  So this doesn't work perfectly.

And EVEN if all of that is great, please, I beg of you, perform one final check:  the hand ratio.

select and copy the hand onto a new blank layer:

now drag it next to the face (and turn it if you need to, so the hand aligns with the face - in this case, since his face is sideways, turn it sideways):

and draw yourself guides to check that the distance from chin to hairline = distance from palm of hand to tips of fingers:

Obviously this is not going to work with bases that don't have hands.  And you have to be careful that the base isn't telescoping in some way (ie: the hands are closer to the camera, so they're bigger, or behind the person's head, so they're smaller).  But on the whole, this method WILL work.  It will make your manips look better.  It will help you control that "big actor head" thing (because it is true, actors have bigger heads than other people, and sometimes this really does trip us up, because they look proportional on their own bodies, but wildly out of proportion on someone else's).

but there you have it.  the hand test.

Excellent tip. I'll make sure to keep that in mind.

that's what we're here for! although you're not an abuser, but hey, if we pass the knowledge... maybe it'll trickle down, right :D
